Figured it out. For those having the same problem. you need to make sure
the following are installed:
sudo apt-get install libc-client2007e libc-client2007e-dev
sudo apt-get install php5-imap
sudo apt-get install openssl
sudo service apache2 restart
worked, but doesn't look like it does attachments :(
